10 Juice Recipes to Keep You Healthy this Winter

The temperatures are low and the days are short, it can mean only one thing: flu season. If you’re sick of fighting off colds or you’re looking to head the next one off before it arrives, it might be time you took a look at your diet.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 green apples

  • 2 large carrots
  • 1 bunch curly kale (5 large leaves)
  • 2 large stalks celery

This juice is not for the faint of heart, but it is one of the most invigorating drinks you can have that doesn’t rely on caffeine. Ginger is among the hottest ingredients to hit the health food market, and health expert Deepak Chopra describes it as a superfood. There are loads of health benefits to vitamin C-packed lemon too, so this shot is one of the best ways to start your day.

According to health guru Deliciously Ella, beets are a great source of iron, potassium, magnesium, folic acid and vitamins A, C and B6. The iron from the beetroot raises your energy levels, while the cucumber and celery are thought to flush out toxins and boost the immune system. All in all, this juice is likely to give you a much-needed winter boost. Plus, all that beetroot makes this one of the prettiest juices around!

  • 1 beetroot

  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 sticks of celery
  • 3 carrots
  • 1 red apple
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger

Doctors have been talking about the health benefits of vitamin C since we were kids, and it’s no secret that this vitamin could act as a natural preventative when it comes to getting ill. This smoothie is chocked full of carrots, apples and oranges which are all known to be full of vitamin C.

According to the experts at Harvard University, consuming 200mg of vitamin C a day appeared to reduce cold symptoms, and if they’re saying it, we’re hardly going to doubt them. Get shopping and stock up.

What you’ll need:

  • 3 oranges

  • 2 carrots
  • 3 cored apples

This citrussy, tropical drink will take you right back to long, sunny days by the beach. Packed with flavour and loaded with vitamins, you’ll wonder why it’s taken you so long to discover it. And the best part? It’s packed with health-giving turmeric. Turmeric is cropping up everywhere at the moment, and health bloggers swear by the stuff. Studies have shown it has strong disease-fighting potential – illness be gone!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 large ripe banana

  • 1 large orange such as a navel orange with the rind removed
  • ½-inch peeled fresh turmeric or about ¼-½ tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1 cup frozen mango chunks

 

  1. Winter goodness

If you’ve been paying attention, you should know all about the Food Medic (aka Dr Hazel Wallace) by now. The author and doctor has gone through years of training and knows just about all there is to know about staying healthy. She claims her warming juice recipe is just the thing to give you a mid-winter boost. It contains all of the usual suspects plus an added boost from cayenne pepper, thought to treat all manner of health ailments.

  • 250 ml oat milk (homemade or shop-brought)

  • 1 tsp golden turmeric honey
  • ¼ tsp of cayenne pepper
  • 1 small fresh beetroot
  • 3 cm piece of ginger

Something about the word ‘cabbage’ has been known to fill us with dread, but we promise this recipe is different. Red cabbage contains anthocyanins, which studies have shown helps to suppress inflammation. Plus, the elderberry extract is a natural cold and flu fighter, sometimes used as a natural alternative to cough medicine.

What you’ll need:

  • 200 g chopped red cabbage

  • 200 ml water
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 200 g blackberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 tsp elderberry extract

 

  1. Watermelon no-jito

Watermelon and mint aren’t only a delicious combo, they’re also super good for you. This deliciously indulgent juice is packed with lycopene, thought to be a powerful antioxidant that can protect against all sorts of diseases. Plus, mint contains menthol, which is a natural decongestant that could help to clear your sinuses. Did we mention that it also tastes delicious?

  • 200 g Swiss chard, stems removed

  • A handful of fresh mint, stems removed
  • 200 g chopped watermelon
  • 200 g chopped mango
  • Juice of ½ lime

 

  1. Carrot, strawberry, apple and ginger

Full of vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants known as polyphenols, strawberries are just the thing to boost your immune system when you’re feeling low. They’re full of magnesium and potassium too. Add that to vitamin C from the carrots and apple and the all-round zinginess of ginger and you have one great juice!
